Google Forms AI Team to “Model the World” and Train Robots

Google Assembles AI Team to Accelerate “World Modeling” and Achieve AGI

Google is hiring AI specialists to fast-track global modeling efforts and achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

DeepMind, Google’s AI-focused subsidiary, is forming a new team of AI researchers to develop “world models” for simulating physical environments. This initiative is led by Tim Brooks, a former director of Project Sora, who joined DeepMind a few months ago.

World modeling is a relatively new concept in AI, aimed at diverse goals such as creating real-time interactive environments for video games and films, as well as realistic training scenarios for robots and other AI systems. This is part of Google’s broader mission to achieve AGI sooner rather than later.

In a post on X, Tim Brooks announced: “DeepMind has ambitious plans to create generative models for world simulation.” Brooks also shared two job openings for engineers and researchers to advance AI world models capable of simulating real-world scenarios. These roles will address challenges related to large-scale training, data collection, and integrating these datasets into large language models.

DeepMind described the roles in the job postings: “We believe large-scale training using video and multimedia data is critical for developing AGI. World models will power a wide range of fields, including visual reasoning, simulation, planning for embodied agents, and real-time interactive entertainment.”

DeepMind’s World Modeling Project Faces Competitors Like NVIDIA and World Labs

DeepMind’s World Modeling project is entering a competitive landscape, with rivals such as NVIDIA’s Cosmos platform, which focuses on advancing physical AI, autonomous vehicles, and robotics. Another key competitor is World Labs, a startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, often referred to as the “Godmother of AI.”

DeepMind’s new team will work alongside Google’s existing AI projects, including its flagship Gemini model, the Veo tool for video creation, and the Genie model for simulating 3D environments. Together, they aim to push the boundaries of AI through the ambitious World Models initiative.
